The Secrets of Creation

Have you noticed, dear reader, how beautiful our earth is? If we look at the great mountains, the deep blue lakes, the roaring waterfalls, the delicate flowers, and the many trees, our hearts are filled with joy.

It is difficult for us to imagine that this marvellous world was once barren, desolate, and flooded with water. On it, there was no possibility for any living thing to exist. There wasn't even solid ground.

The question that comes to mind is: How did this world become so magnificent and breathtaking, with so much life, after having been so desolate?

On the first page of the book of Genesis we read: In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was desolate and empty, and darkness was over the surface of the deep. And the spirit of God was hovering over the waters. This is a mystery: God brought this world into being from nothing. He revealed Himself as the creator and maker of all things. He deserves our praise and worship.

For in Him all things were created; things in the heavens and on earth, what is seen and unseen. All things were created through Him and for Him(Colossians 1:16).

How did God bring our earth into being? He said, Let there be light, and there was light by the power of His great word.

What God says happens!

The light of God shone on the darkness that had covered the earth. God saw that the light was good. Then God separated the light from the darkness, and the light became brilliant. God's light shone on the universe, and God called the light day and the darkness He called night. This was the first day of Creation - when God made the universe.

On the second day, God continued the work of Creation.

After He had separated the day from night, God also separated the waters. At first, water covered everything, so God created the sky to separate the waters. There was a lot of water below and above the sky. Our sky, which we can see from the earth, sometimes looks blue and clear, and at other times we see it filled with fluffy white clouds. When it is black, it warns us of thunder and storms.

And as evening descended, the second day of Creation ended.

On the third day of Creation, God again separated the waters. Since the earth was still covered by water, God commanded it to be gathered into special places. Obeying the order of God, the waters gathered in different seas, lakes, and rivers. This is how the dry land appeared. Large areas of land were free of water.

God called the dry ground land and the gatherings of water, seas. And God saw that this was good.

After this, God made the dry land become delightfully attractive. He let different kinds of grasses and herbs grow, and all kinds of dazzling flowers too. Fruit- bearing trees grew, and their fruits taste so delicious to us. Our great God created all kinds of trees in the many lands of the world.

How beautiful our earth appeared in the splendour of all its colours! Its excellence reflects the greatness, power, and majesty of its Creator.

The Lord God saw that everything He had made was good, on this, the third day of Creation.

On the fourth day of Creation, the earth became more lovely still. God created the flaming sun, the peaceful moon, and the twinkling stars.

The flowers bloomed in even brighter colours - more radiantly than before. The grasses and herbs in the fields also grew faster under the warm rays of the sun, as did the many trees. So the sun rose every morning to warm the earth, and set in the evenings, vanishing on the horizon.

The night was not desolate, for the moon and the stars, which God had created, illuminated it. Both the sun and moon received a very special and distinct job from God. One of the tasks was to separate day from night. God had made the one light - the sun - bigger to rule the day by its presence. The dim lights, the moon and the many stars, were to decorate the night with a soft glow.

The lights had the privilege of brightening the earth. But there was another duty for them as well: to mark the time, the years, and the days.

And God saw that His work on the fourth day was also good.

Then the fifth day of Creation began. Do you know what God created on that day?

God made all the creatures that live in the water and the air. By His command, the waters were filled immediately with small and big fish. God created them in their many different forms, colours, and species. The biggest were the whales and the sharks which have the seas as their home.

Freshwater fish are found in the rivers, lakes, and swamps.

God gave every animal a special place to live.

After this, the air was filled with the sounds of flapping wings and chirps of twittering birds that sang a song of praise to their Creator. The bees buzzed busily from flower to flower, sucking up the nectar and turning it into sweet, sticky honey.

The butterflies, with their brilliant wings, added radiance to the scene as they fluttered through the mild, pure air. High above the towering trees, the eagle soared with its big, outstretched wings.

God was delighted with His new creations on the fifth day; they filled His earth with life, and He saw that all He had created was good. God blessed all the animals in the water and the air. He said to them, Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth.

Motion filled the earth, but there was no life on the land yet, so God said, I will create different kinds of animals to fill the land, both big and small ones.

So God created the wild animals - the lions, elephants, and bears. He also created the tame animals like the cows, horses, donkeys, sheep, cats, and dogs.

God also created the reptiles that crawl on their bellies: lizards, turtles, and worms too! All these animals lived together peacefully on this wonderful earth that God had made. None harmed the other.

And God admired His work and saw that all was good.

God created the animals on the sixth day, but they were not the last thing He created. He reserved His grandest creation till the end: man!

And God said, Let Us make man in Our image and likeness.God spoke here in the plural form, We. To whom was God speaking? He addressed Christ who had been with Him from the very beginning. God wished that man should be in His likeness, thinking and feeling as He does. He created man, male and female, in the image of God. Not only men reflect the image of their maker; women do too!

And God named the first man Adam, and Adam called his wife Eve.

And God blessed Adam and Eve and told them both: Be fruitful and multiply, so that your descendants fill the earth. I also want both of you to rule over everything I've created - over the fish in the waters, over the birds in the sky, and over all the animals on the land. Take good care of them. From the many different seeds, vegetables, and fruits which grow in abundance, you can eat what pleases you. I have created everything for your enjoyment. For the animals, I have provided the grasses and different herbs as food.

Everything was as God had commanded it to be. And God looked at what He had made and saw that it was all very good.

Only on this day did God say that it was very good, because He had created man in His own image.

And the sixth day of Creation came to an end.

With this, God completed the work of Creation: The sky with its many stars, including the moon and the sun, and the earth with its many plants and animals, and man.

And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, and appointed this day as a day of rest.

God gave man a rest from work on the seventh day; it is meant to be a day kept free for God. We spend this day praising God and worshipping Him. We talk to Him in our prayers and ask Him for new strength to work in the six days that lie ahead. This rest gives us the energy to work the rest of the week in fellowship with God. He who created us in our splendid beauty deserves our honour, worship, and thanksgiving!
